Dear Mary,
Probably there is a letter from you at the Battalion but you see I have now shifted to a better climate although I was not very willing to leave the Coy. I am just now working in the orderly room here clerking. I don’t know how long it will last but I hope until the warm weather comes in. There seems to be a very long time since I heard from you There is now six days since I came here & of course I had no letters as yet and did not get any away until today. This is my address so please write soon & you can also give my address to Phemie. We are not in a big town only a village but not so bad. I have no more news just now so write soon.

Dear Mary,

I received your P C on Friday but the parcel has not yet arrived. It may be in tonight but I will tell you if I get it. We are still hopping about here. The weather is a bit wet & fairly cold today is the best I saw since long. I can hardly believe Christmas is so near and yet the weeks pass by very quickly. It will be a dull Christmas for many this time. We all got a pair of new boots last week. My old ones were pretty far through. I paid 9 ၁ to get tackels & toe plates in them here. They fairly put on to us and it is rarely we get what we want. The chap that was killed from Letters has another brother in our Coy and he never knew about his death until he saw his name in the list he is pretty cut up about it and he saw one of the [illegible] last night that knew his brother. They never mentioned it [illegible]. I hope that small parcel will come. Must close now with love to all, thank Mrs Ross from me,

Dear Marie,
I am a bit late in replying to your letter but better late than never Well there s just the same news as usual all is well we had rather a rotten time of it in that battle but that’s what may be expected. We are back resting just now but I expect we will soon be up to do another attack. We only go up there to do attacks and it is always where the difficult work is we are sent although you don’t here much about it at home however if we get through it does’nt matter. We are having fine warm weather now & not before time as we had more than enough rain. Well I don’t think there is anything more to say so tata	with love Doddo</text>

Dear Marie,
Thanks for letter received two nights ago glad to see you are kicking along alright although worked so hard. My word you nurses cant be pleased. Fancy kicking against Miss Cross “The dear old thing” you will soon be kicking herself. You would require some of the army discipline to keep you kids in order but cheerio better days coming. I have just finished attending a Gas School which gives me rather a responsible duty in the Coy. By the way I dont know if I told you in my last letter that I am L/CPL instead of PTE. I am afraid I will be home too soon for your holidays if they will be as late as Xmas but I don’t know yet. I will have to take mine when I get them you know but if you are both there perhaps I will spend a night in Dingwall if I can get a bed but I am not going to make any plans as yet. Yes I would like to see photos of the [illegible] so send them out next letter. We have dry frosty weather just now & very cold at nights. No more just now so write soon
	Love from Doddo</text>

Dear Marie,
Thanks for your letter received yesterday, or the day before I am not sure. Well my sojourn at Nigg is near at an end now and I can’t say that I am sorry. Well there has been nothing exciting doing since last I wrote so I don’t think this letter will be long. I will leave here on Thursday and will probably spend the weekend in Dingwall or at least a couple of nights. I hardly fancy starting the back kitchen myself the result might be dangerous to all concerned and I would like to go to Edinburgh for a few days but fares are pretty stiff just now. I am such a restless creature now that I hardly know what to do with myself I don’t know if I told you that I got presented with my Military Medal lately it is a very nice medal, all silver. The flu is going pretty strong down Dingwall way. There are a few cases going from here also. I hope Euphy has not got it. I have not heard from her since a while. I had a letter from Nellie H. tonight usual cheek. Dina is on the fever side now Old Nurse Miklejohn is still going strong. It has been very stormy & cold today & the fire is the best place. There is a chap playing a fiddle just now beside me & I am writing rather hurriedly. We are going to have a dance so mind I am going on Thursday so if you don’t have time to answer at once my address will be at home.
Love from Dodd

Dear Mary,
You will be a bit surprised when you receive this but of course one must look for surprises these days. Well to cut a long story short I took a dose of trench fever one hot day in the trenches. I got to hospital & eventually arrived here early this morning and I [illegible] this is a heavenly change. I am about alright now but will probably be kept here for a bit. There is no news to give you so drop a letter soon. I don’t suppose you would be able to run down. It is a pity I didn’t get to Edinburgh. I don’t know what to do without cash as I can’t draw any until I leave here.

Dear Marie,
I received your letter today quite a long one for you & a few questions also. Well things are going along alright here now since the mutiny It only lasted two days and there was no damage done, they were very quiet. The strike was about parades & the food and everything was granted We only do two hours parade a day now so have plenty of time on hand but can’t get into any mischief here a good job too. We get real tea now & not before time. I have put in for a weekend pass to Dingwall just to break the monotony you know, not giving away any secrets. I had my application from the Bank sent to me through the Ministry of Labour Department and that is a start towards demobilization but it may take quite a while before I get away but I don’t know I will have to go down to Kinross or somewhere south to a dispersing station when getting discharged so I intend going to Edinburgh for a few days if possible but I will let you know when I get there. I hope the nurse that is on duty with you is a sport. When I was home I wrote Simmone at Calais and I had a reply today, poor wee kid. Had you any word from Euphy yet? I think I will write her tonight. I was for a ramble along the seashore today & enjoyed it. It is an awful job to pass the time away There is nothing in Cromarty worth seeing Dont be long in writing as I might get the kick before long. Remember me to nurse Mackenzie at Bangour when you write her	Love Dodo</text>

Dear Mary,
Just a note to let you know my whereabouts. Well I have had the rotten luck to be sent down here and my word it is a change No more nice tasty meals. No more nice nurses to tease and a lot more nice things missing. This is a military place & everything tastes military The town is not bad but it is no use going into it without plenty of money. It is a seaside town & a big holiday resort so that it is always pretty lively but the camp is a rotten place and I wont stick it very long. Well I have not much news to give you so write soon. Love from Doddo</text>

Dear Mary,
Thanks very much for your letter containing £1 which I received this morning. I never expected you to send me money you know & really I was not giving you any hints but thanks all the same and I wont forget about it when I will get some money. Well I am getting on alright now. I am out of bed today so may get out in a day or two. It is a good job you did not come down yesterday as you would not have got in without a pass. I am sending you on the pass & you can see for yourself the visiting days & hours etc. and I will be to pleased to see somebody I know.
It is a pity I did not get to Edinburgh but I can’t grumble as long as I got to Scotland.
I had a letter from mother this morning nothing much doing at home.
It is funny the way letters go. I sent one to you & Nellie also one home & another to London all at once. I got a reply from Nellie (H) & from London two days ago.
When I go to convalescence I may get to Bangour (not very sure of the spelling) which is only ten miles or so from Edinburgh, so I might be able to get a pass to see you, but I am not going to make any arrangements just now. I don’t think there is anything more I can say. Isn’t it sad about Bobbie Campbell.
Write soon again Love Dodo</text>
